I recently started to teach an innovative workshop about creating paints, surfaces and textures using alchemy with pigments, recycled materials and  acrylic mediums. This workshop is designed to teach students to develop unique textures and colors which are not possible using traditional materials.

The advance and change in student’s work has been very noticeable. They have a better understanding of color and composition. Students have been experimenting with new textures like fabric, paper, calcium carbonate, wood and glitter so far.

Compositing is the art of placing the elements of an image so that the viewer’s attention is made to the point that interests us (focus) and to achieve their communicative purpose.

Dos puertorriqueños en la diáspora encuentran la oportunidad de una vida para y por el arte. Erick Sánchez, desde Nueva York, y Cristina Córdova, desde Carolina del Norte.

Empezar de nuevo

Cuando en el 1996 Erick Sánchez decidió ayudar a un buen amigo a pintar un mural, descubrió una nueva forma de vivir. Lo que se inició como un pasatiempo, hoy es su mayor pasión y el motivo que lo llevó a volar lejos en busca de un nuevo sueño.

Hace poco más de una década, Erick decidió dejar atrás su carrera como restauranteur para darle paso al arte. Abrió una galería en el Viejo San Juan y es ahí que descubre lo que realmente quiere hacer con su vida. Hace cinco años tomó una decisión: lo dejaría todo por ir a Nueva York a seguir un solo camino, una sola dirección: el Arte.

Desde entonces, este ponceño, pinta y plasma sus pensamientos y sentimientos sobre canvas. Este artista visual crea con diversidad de materiales tales como: acrílico, escarcha, goma reciclada, pedazos de cristal, aluminio, cobre, magnesio, carbón, grafito, uretano, acero inoxidable, oro y plata, polvo de mármol y carbonato de calcio.

Su nueva serie: Génesis: Creación y Decadencia, nació de la inquietud por trabajar algo positivo. Para ello, Erick decidió estudiar, investigar La Biblia.

“Me empecé a interesar por el libro de Génesis por la posibilidad visual que tendría la serie. Me sentía en el mood de un nuevo comienzo”. Este nuevo grupo de obras representa el drama y la esperanza de ese libro”.

“Utilizo formatos de gran escala en mis pinturas e instalaciones. Yo tenía un proyecto muy ambicioso en mi mente, pero con recursos limitados”, relata Erick, quien movió cielo y tierra para hacer la exposición de esas piezas. Y lo logró, pues consiguió un singular espacio: la histórica Iglesia Santa María la Virgen en Times Square, Nueva York.

Este año el arte de este paisano nuestro será parte de la Tercera Bienal del Museo del Bronx. “Es una bienal bien importante en Nueva York. De sobre un millar de artistas, seleccionaron a 76”, dice él muy orgulloso, ya que es de hecho el único artista boricua en el evento.

ESTE CURSO ESTA DIVIDIDO EN DOS PARTES PRIMORDIALES: Comienza el 18 de abril de 2013

A- Manipulación de materiales y pigmentos:

Con las técnicas aprendidas en New York y Francia, el artísta Erick Sánchez llevara a cabo un taller innovador en PR a cerca de la creación de pinturas, superficies y texturas utilizando alquimia con pigmentos, materiales reciclados y no tradicionales sobre medios acrílicas. Este taller esta orientado a desarrollar diferentes texturas  y colores únicos los cuales no son posibles utilizando materiales tradicionales.

B- Diseño, color y composición dentro de la pintura abstracta y expresionista:

A lo largo de la historia del arte, los artistas han manipulado colores y valores de diferentes maneras personales e interesantes. La comprensión de cómo mezclar los colores y valores, y más importante aún, la composición y la comprensión de sus relaciones, es una parte esencial de la educación de un artista. Este taller se centrará en la composición del valor y el color en la pintura. Juntos vamos a estudiar cómo los artistas han diseñado sus obras, y practicará la pintura trabajando cuidadosamente los colores y valores. Este taller estará abierto a niveles intermedio y avanzado de estudiantes utilizando pintura acrílica. Se recomienda como una forma de mejorar la mezcla de colores, composición y diseño de la obra.

Se utilizarán materiales como: acero inoxidable, polvo de oro, goma, piedra y carbon, entre otros.

OBJETIVOS DEL CURSO:

- Aprender la técnica y alquimia necesaria de crear tu propia pintura utilizando pigmentos
- Crear diferentes texturas y disfrutar manipulando y practicando con materiales nuevos y diversos, conociendo las nuevas posibilidades que se nos presentan y sus propiedades expresivas tales como: goma molida, piedra, carbonato de calcio, acero inoxidable en polvo, laminas de plata, oro y bronce, entre otros.
- Adquirir practica y conocimiento a fondo sobre diseño, color y composición.
- Estimular la lectura sobre arte y técnicas para enriquecer el conocimiento de los estudiantes.
- Potenciar la expresión conceptual y emocional a través de procedimientos plásticos.
- Despertar la creatividad, la imaginación, el gusto por la estética y el espíritu de superación, a través del desarrollo de las ideas.
- Incrementar la percepción visual y destreza manual, mediante la observación.
- Interpretar y valorar las creaciones personales y las de los compañeros con una actitud crítica y respetuosa, con el fin de seguir avanzando motivándonos.
- Reflexionar y analizar el mundo visual que nos rodea, potenciando nuestras sensibilidades.
- Despertar la conciencia de hábitos y usos responsables de recursos y materiales de reciclaje, explorando las posibilidades artísticas de objetos y materiales de uso cotidiano.
- Promover valores como el orden, la organización y el respeto de tiempos y turnos.

Trabajo con textura, pigmentos y bolsas plásticas

Te enseñaré a crear diferentes texturas utilizando carbonato de calcio y otros materiales.

Te enseñaré a trabajar con lamina de cobre, aluminio y oro.

This workshop will also focus on the composition and value of color in painting. We will talk about how artists have designed their works throughout history but also will explore new possibilities.

The intensive workshop will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm for 9 sessions beginning on April 18, 2013. It is open to intermediate and advanced students using acrylic paint. Spaces are limited. Call and reserve yours now.

The Artist Entrepreneur: How Technology is Transforming the Art World

Seth Godin says, “All artists are entrepreneurs. All entrepreneurs are artists.” With the advent of new technology startups like Kickstarter, Eventbrite and Artsicle, Godin’s vision is getting elevated to the next level enabling artists to take their career into their own hands.

For centuries, artists have relied on individuals and institutions to patronize their work.  To put together a solo show, artists would have to have gallery representation, which required a lot of luck and connections. Or, if they had money, the artist could pay a mediocre gallery to show their work, a luxury that very few artists could afford.

Now, new technologies are disrupting the art world in ways that were never imagined, allowing artists to fund, promote and create their own shows.

Erick Sánchez, a visual artist living in New York City, is a great example of an artist who has embraced new technologies to take his career to the next level. “I had excellent representation in New York City at the William Bennett Gallery in Soho,” says Sánchez. “When they shut down, I no longer had a place to show my work. I got frustrated trying to connect with other galleries and finally, I decided to take my career in my own hands.”

Erick was determined to be the creator of his own destiny. He had an ambitious project in mind, but limited resources on hand. Erick reached out to his network and found a unique free space for a solo show — a church in Times Square. Getting the free space was good, but he still needed money for art supplies, invitations and programs. So he turned to Kickstarter, a new startup that lets individuals leverage social networks to fund projects. To create his Kickstarter campaign, Erick had to make a video explaining the project, so he taught himself how to use Sony Vegas video editing software. After he created the Kickstarter page, he then marketed and promoted the project using his WordPress website, email list of over two thousand artists and collectors, and Facebook where he has over three thousand friends.

Erick was able to successfully fund his Kickstarter project and raise $3,800 — enough to fund the out of pocket costs for his solo show.

Erick then created his printed invitations on InDesign (which he taught himself using Youtube) and digital invitations on Eventbrite. Erick is now using social media and blogs, such as Artefuse, to market his show.

All of this effort is culminating with a show called Genesis: Creation and Decadence on November 1st at 7pm at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Times Square. Genesis means a new beginning. In many ways, this name of Erick’s show not only refers to the subject of his work, but also the fact that he is now using technology tools to seek his own destiny.

Erick is a pioneer in the artists’ community, but he’s not the only one disrupting the old-school industry. And in the future, we will see more artists, who are feeling frustrated and limited, embrace their own fate by making their art careers in the cloud. This is the genesis of a new art world.

In my last newsletter I shared that I’m currently working on an exiting new exhibition project entitled: Genesis: Creation and Decadence that will be presented on November 1, 2012 at The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin Gallery Space in Times Square.

The new paintings for the show are coming together nicely and I wanted to give you a sneak peek of what you can expect.

We are also about 1/3 of the way to our goal on the Kickstarter fundraising project and only 2 weeks to go. A lot of people are very intrigue about the exhibition, the paintings and venue.
